There are generally two types of zodiac sign combinations that indicate possible romantic compatibility.

1. Both people have equal amounts of Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) / Air signs (Libra, Gemini, Aquarius) to their Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) / Earth Signs (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo). This is called a egalitarian 50/50 energy signature.

2. One person has more Fire and Air signs, while the other person has more Water and Earth signs. This is called a more traditional energy signature match (75/25), which aligns with the idea of "opposites attract" or "yin and yang."

*If both partners have the same dominant elements in their birth charts (for example both people have a lot of water and earth signs), there is compatibility but it may be more platonic in nature.

Yes! It's absolutely possible to technically not have very compatible zodiac signs in a synastry chart, and still have a very loving relationship. True compatibility usually goes beyond just zodiac signs, and should take into account a person's ability to compromise in relationship, be open to the other partner's needs and ability to communicate through difficult moments. Zodiac compatibility is helpful to understand the lens through which differences in energetic expression so you can be mindful of your partner's needs.

There's actually no real measure that could indicate a true "compatibility score" using your astrology chart. While some zodiac signs are more compatible than others, there is a variety of possible ways a person could express their zodiac signs. If a person does not express their signs in a "balanced" expression, then even if technically their signs are a good match, the relationship will likely encounter struggles. The closest way to figure out a compatibility score would be to book a birth chart compatibility reading with an astrologer so you can discover the full potential of connection you may have with someone else.

There's a variety of key factors in astrology and between two birth charts that help identify compatibility level. As a therapeutic astrologer, first I start with the two people's energetic signature, which is a ratio of energy expression that takes into consideration all of their zodiac placements. The differences in masculine and feminine energy based on earth, water, air and fire signs, helps give a foundation of how this person naturally wants to express. Then I discuss if each person is actually in alignment with their energy signature. If not, this can pose issues in the relationship which is important to understand and heal. After this, we go through all of the sun, moon, rising signs, as well as mercury signs, venus signs, mars signs etc to see if there are easier or more tense correlations in those aspects.
